101st Airborne Division is the most famous paratroopers unit that
served in World War II. It was nicknamed “screming eagle” because of the
insignia (an eagle with an open beak) the soldiers carried on the
shoulder. The 101st Airborne took part in the military operations of
D-Day with many drops on strategical objectives behind enemy lines. The
101st Airborne also took part in Operation Market Garden and especially
in the battle of the Ardennes, at the siege of Bastogne, where they
strenuously resisted the last counterattack of the German troops.
